What is Mouse Jacking?

Mouse jacking refers to an attack that exploits the wireless communication between a computer’s wireless mouse and its USB receiver. Most wireless mice operate using either Bluetooth or proprietary radio frequencies to communicate with their paired devices. When a user moves the mouse or clicks a button, a signal is sent to the receiver, which then translates this action into a corresponding input on the computer.

In a mouse jacking attack, a hacker with the appropriate equipment can inject signals into this communication, allowing them to control the mouse or the computer it is connected to. The vulnerability stems from the fact that many wireless mice do not use robust encryption or authentication methods. In the absence of proper security measures, hackers can broadcast their own signals to the receiver, often without the user noticing anything unusual. As a result, a mouse jacking attack can be highly effective and difficult to detect.

How Does Mouse Jacking Work?

To perform a successful attack, the hacker needs to monitor the wireless signal being sent between the mouse and its receiver. They may use tools like software-defined radios (SDRs) or specialised USB receivers that are capable of picking up signals from wireless devices operating on certain frequencies, such as 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth. Once the attacker has detected the signal and understood how it works, they can inject their own data packets into the communication stream. These signals can be crafted to mimic legitimate mouse movements, clicks, or keyboard inputs.

How to Protect Against Mouse Jacking

To mitigate the risks of mouse jacking, individuals and organisations should take several precautionary steps.

Use Encrypted Devices

Whenever possible, choose wireless mice that use encrypted communication protocols or Bluetooth devices that support strong pairing mechanisms. Many modern devices come with encryption as standard, which significantly reduces the risk of interception.

Keep Devices Updated

Regularly update the firmware and drivers for wireless devices, as manufacturers may release patches to address vulnerabilities.

Disable Unnecessary Wireless Devices

If you are not using a wireless mouse or keyboard, disable Bluetooth or other wireless functionality to reduce the attack surface.

Use Secure Networks
